10 days remain in 2010.  I have fasted 296 meals so far.  I have 4 meals to go.

Yesterday was a really long day. I was at work for eight hours and at band practice for nearly five hours.  I had breakfast and dinner.  Today promises to be a very long day as I have the same schedule again.  I ate what was in the fridge so I brought some leftover soup and what I had left for a green leaf salad with tomato, yellow bell pepper and a couple of cups romaine lettuce.  Soup was breakfast at 9:00 am , and salad around 11:00 am.  There is a giant coconut bundt cake at work and I had a piece of that for the second day in a row.  Enough cake.

Funny but I would rather have 4 ounces of grilled steak over a piece of cake any day.  They hold about the same calories.  However, there is almost never a chunk of grilled steak around. 

I don’t believe I will fast today.  I am very tired and have a long way to go to finish out the day.  I may grab something to eat on the way to band practice.

December 21

11 days remain in 2010.  I have fasted 295 meals so far and have five meals to go.

Was able to fast two meals yesterday.  Made a wonderful chicken and wild rice soup for dinner.  I do like soup and it makes a person feel full.

It is the darkest day of the year in the northern hemisphere.  It is the winter solstice.  There was a lunar eclipse last night, but I forgot to go outside and look.  The days will being to get longer.  I need sunlight.

Today I will fast lunch only as I have a music rehearsal and dinner with praise band folks tonight.

December 20

12 days remain in 2010.  I have fasted 293 meals and have seven meals to go.

I managed to eat two meals on Sunday and fast one.  This is a tough time of year to do much fasting.  I am regretting in some ways goofing off and having meals to fast at this point.  Then in other ways I think it is keeping me from overindulging in holiday cheer and goodies.

I ate fairly late last night for my Mother’s birthday party.  I have a dinner thing tonight with a friend.  Normally I do not like fasting breakfast at all, but I am fasting breakfast and lunch today.

Thoughts on breakfast.  Breakfast is usually the smallest meal of the day.  Many people skip breakfast (most fat people don’t eat breakfast).  I work full time and believe I need some energy to get my metabolism going and be able to think clearly as I do research and mathematical analysis.  I can have breakfast and be good to go for the entire day, but when I don’t have breakfast my blood sugar level seems to really drop off by 10:00.  I don’t have a very productive day without breakfast.  My advice to people fasting one meal each day is to make that vow for lunch or dinner.  Breakfast is important and gets us going.

December 17

15 days remain in 2010.  I have fasted 292 meals and have 8 to go.

As you could see from my update, I didn’t fast two meals yesterday.  When one makes a vow to fast, one should absolutely keep it. 

In the book of Second Samuel 3:22-3:35,  Joab murders Abner.  Abner was innocent.  David declares a time of mourning for Abner with sackcloth and fasting. King David writes a song for Abner.  Someone urges David to break his fast and eat something.  He reminds them that he has vowed to fast and says, “May God deal with me, be it ever so severely, if I taste bread or anything else before the sun sets!”  David took his word and his vow quite seriously.  We should all take a vow to fast before God seriously.

I hope God does not deal ever so severely with me for my transgression yesterday.  I did earnestly pray and ask for forgiveness in breaking my vow.  Today is Friday and it is a no fasting day.

December 16 update

I had a weak moment and lost it.  I was over confident this morning.

SO I had breakfast AND lunch today.  Time to pray and get back to it. 

I had some baked butternut squash and fresh leaf lettuce, olives and feta with balsamic dressing in the fridge at work.  I just went in and made lunch and ate it, after I said I would fast.  Never do what I just did.  Always pray before you break your fast. 

I am fasting dinner tonight.
